Solarator® Fold-Out 60+ kW

Sustainable Power for Highway Construction: The Solarator® Impact on the Newell Highway Project

THE CHALLENGE

From 2019 to 2023, the New South Wales Government, AECOM, and BMD undertook a $1.7 billion project to construct 37 miles of new overtaking lanes and improve highway resilience and reliability along the Newell Highway. Since the project was completed in stages along a 620-mile stretch of road, teams had to navigate varying ground and weather conditions, logistical complexities, and resourcing challenges. Additionally, as fuel costs and emissions regulations tightened, the project stakeholders began approaching ROXBOX and Black Stump for a renewable alternative to replace their costly diesel generators.

SOLARATOR™ SOLUTION

ROXBOX’s robust and reliable Solarator® Fold-Out 60+ kW replaced a 110 kW diesel generator at BMD Group’s Newell Highway site, resulting in annual fuel cost savings of $168,000 and annual carbon emissions reductions of 496,000 lbs. With the current configuration, BMD Group can expect a payback in just 1.6 years. By strategically leveraging renewable energy, the fold-out unit has significantly reduced CO₂ emissions and fuel costs compared to the traditional diesel-powered approach.
