MCCONNELL DOWELL SOLARATOR™ COMPACT 40+ kW

Acciona
Innovative Power Solutions for the Heysen Tunnels Project
THE CHALLENGE
To enhance safety, traffic management, and incident response at Heysen Tunnels, Australia’s Department for Infrastructure and Transport partnered with McConnell Dowell. As part of the $350M South Eastern Freeway Upgrade—the primary connection between Adelaide and Melbourne—this project ensures continuous, sustainable operations in a challenging environment. Limited available space prevented the installation of fixed solar infrastructure or a full-scale solar array deployment. Additionally, the site required a dependable, 24/7 power source to support night operations and essential site facilities.
SOLARATOR™ SOLUTION
To address these challenges, McConnell Dowell deployed the Solarator™ Compact 40+ kW, a mobile, modular, and rapidly deployable power solution. This innovative system is expected to reduce carbon emissions by up to 282,000 pounds annually while generating significant cost savings of $95,000 per year in fuel expenses. With a payback period of just 2.5 years, the solution not only delivers financial and environmental benefits but also aligns with the company’s broader sustainability objectives.
